Psychological Coaching? Why Bother?
Coaching is not just about setting realistic goals, prioritizing, making action plans and realizing them. Very often we do that with or without a coach, but how much do we achieve?
We are a mixture of emotions, thinking patterns, habits, most of which we consciously do not control. In reality, it is our clouded thinking patterns and emotions that direct us by sabotaging our conscious intention.
The simple approach in cognitive behavioral coaching (CBC) is based on Epictetus statement: “People are disturbed not by things but by their views of things”. This point has further been developed by Albert Ellis, one of the founders of modern cognitive therapy. He distinguishes between negative emotions that are problematic and emotions that are constructive. People experience problematic negative emotions like anxiety, shame, depression when confronted by negative events when they hold rigid and extreme beliefs about the negative events in their lives.
People experience constructive negative emotions about life’s challenges when they hold flexible and non-extreme beliefs about these challenges.
In a nutshell, the beliefs we hold about negativities in our life are central to the way we respond to them emotionally. On top, these beliefs determine how we respond behaviorally and think subsequentially about negative events.
